Tonight I opened my computer and realised delightedly that it was being cohabited by Mark Morford and the live version of Thank you Jack White that The Flaming Lips have made available for our collective listening pleasure. And I was inspired, a la Mark Morford, to wonder what songs Jesus would have on his iPod. We start, of course, with the delicious Thank you Jack White for the fibre-optic Jesus that you gave me, which I’ve personally been trying to track down since I saw The Flaming Lips perform it at the Palace in Melbourne last year. Best. Show. Ever. Anyway, continuing with the Lips love, I reckon Jesus would also have Plastic Jesus and Do You Realise? on pretty constant repeat. Between bouts of the entire amazingly astounding, freely available for download album, Meet The Happies.
Some of those songs would be on a “vanity” Smart Playlist, along with God’s Country by Ani DiFranco, God Only Knows by The Beach Boys, Good News/Bad News About God, Jesus Freak and God Said No from Dan Bern, Elvis Costello’s God Give Me Strength, God by Tori Amos, and Dear God from the divine XTC. There would also be a playlist for other somewhat religious references, like Belly’s Judas My Heart, Eva and Kid’s Prayer by Dan Bern, Jeff Buckley’s version of Corpus Christi Carol, Liz Phair’s Perfect World, Monkey Gone to Heaven by The Pixies, Simon and Garfunkel performing You Can Tell the World, Go Tell it on the Mountain and Benedictus, Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now by The Smiths, Losing My Religion from R.E.M., Lord I Have Made You a Place in my Heart by Greg Brown, and Crucify and Silent All These Years by Tori Amos (and probably a whole bunch of other Tori songs, now that I think about it).
There’d be the music to remind him of why he’s here. The stunning, beautiful, heartbreaking and hopeful Lithuania by Dan Bern (from The Swastika EP) comes to mind first. There’d be a dash of Cardinal (well, all of it, actually), namely You’ve Lost Me There. Mr E’s Beautiful Blues by the Eels, Pitseleh by Elliott Smith, Big Gay Heart by the Lemonheads, Your Revolution by Sarah Jones, Black Boys on Mopeds by Sinéad O’Connor, I Don’t Like Mondays, Me and a Gun, No Thugs in Our House, Fake Plastic Trees, 7 O’Clock News/Silent Night.
And the songs he’d listen to loud and proud, thanks to their beauty or happiness or just general awesomeness. Pretty much all XTC — Pink Thing, We’re All Light, My Brown Guitar, Stupidly Happy. Underwater by Tegan and Sara, Wild Horses — The Sunday’s version, Mayonaise by the Smashing Pumpkins. For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her, The Only Living Boy in New York, Baby Driver, Keep the Customer Satisfied and Bridge Over Troubled Water (the demo version, of course) by his beloved Simon and Garfunkel. R.E.M.’s At My Most Beautiful, What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong, Jeff Buckley singing Hallelujah, Here Comes a Special Boy by Freezepop, Buggin’ by the Flaming Lips, Top of the World by Shonen Knife… and, of course, Tenacious D, Fuck Her Gently.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
