A spanner in the works
January 31st, 2006 by Crumpet

So, I was talking to my boss the other day, and she mentioned the dreaded word — Stocktake. When I asked her the dates for this oh-so-special occasion, she replied with, “It starts on February the 11th… and we’ve rostered you on for five days straight.”
I nearly stopped and complained that I wouldn’t have time to knit, when I remembered how I’m about to empty my savings account.
Anyway, I’ll get 1.5 hours on knitting in on the tram each day, and another 1.5 hours in breaks, then whatever I can do when I get home, so while it will be more challenging this way, I’m still very determined.
I started making a list of my fellow Australian competitors, and also my fellow Mariah competitors on Saturday, but I got distracted then accidentally quit out of Safari and lost all the links I had open in my tabs. The only two I can remember off the top of my head are Kris and Amy (who I met in real life on Friday — hooray!). I may start making the list again, but not until I finish putting together my package for the Craftster Veronica Mars swap…

Brokeback Mountain, part 1
January 30th, 2006 by Crumpet
So, I finally got the chance to fill my pockets with tissues and head off to the cinema to see Brokeback Mountain, which opened in Australia on Thursday just gone. I love $5 Mondays at The Nova. But apparently everybody else does too, because after we drove to the cinema, gave up and parked in a paying carpark and made our way to the box office line, an announcement came over the PA saying that the 1:40pm session had been sold out. It’s not fun to wait months and months for a movie, then not be able to see it at the closest cinema (which you have cheapo vouchers for) on release day because it’s only showing in the big cinemas at freaking Chadstone (even though it’s been nominated for every award from here to kingdom come… gotta love those homophobes who make up the cinema rosters…), so you wait until Monday to see it at a different cinema on cheap day because you’re poor, and you get all the way to the line, and then have to go home again.
I couldn’t bear to wait any longer, so we bought tickets to the next session at 4:20. And yep, you have to pay more for tickets after 4pm on Mondays…

Cinecast Top 5 Crushes
January 27th, 2006 by Crumpet
As inspired by the wonderful CineCast Podcast, I bring you my top 5 film/television man-woman-crushes. Because you all desperately want to know. You can’t fool me.
So, without further ado…
Man Crushes:
1. Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn (Lord of the Rings).
2. Nathan Fillion as Captain Tightpants Malcolm Reynolds (Firefly/Serenity).
3. Ethan Hawke as Jesse (Before Sunrise/Before Sunset).
4. Tulio (voiced by Kevin Kline) in The Road to El Dorado. I’m sure that crushing on a cartoon character makes me some sort of freak, but so be it.
5. A tie (yes, I’m a cheater — I wanted them both in) — Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden (Fight Club) and Johnny Depp as most of the characters he’s ever played. Obvious, yes, but obvious for a very good reason.
Woman Crushes:
1. Claudia Black as Aeryn Sun (Farscape)
2. Sigourney Weaver as Ripley (Alien, and especially with the shaved head in Alien 3).
3. Amber Benson as Tara (Buffy).
4. Katherine Moennig as Shane McCutcheon (The L Word).
5. Audrey Tatou as Amelie Poulain.
EDITED TO ADD:
I couldn’t leave it. I was trying to go “film only” in my man crush list, and as a result, forgot about two of my eternal loves…
1. David Wenham as Diver Dan in Seachange, an Australian TV show from the late 90s. David Wenham has gone on to star in several Australian films, and also appeared in Lord of the Rings as Faramir, but every Australian woman (and most of the men, I’m sure) fell for him hard and fast when he first appeared in Seachange.
2. Colin Firth as Mr Darcy in the BBCs adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Rowr.

It’s been a tough week. Many happenings, both good and bad. First, the bad.

Friday accomplishments.
January 20th, 2006 by Crumpet
Because Kris asked:
1. Finished spinning a sample of soysilk.
2. Attempted to dye said soysilk with food colouring.
3. Started spinning a sample of bamboo.
4. Embroidered on my entry for the Linden Postcard Show (due Monday).
5. Went to work.
6. Embroidered some more on my breaks at work.
7. Am currently cooking risotto and doing blog postage.
8. Will eat and embroider some more.
Edited to add:
9. Ordered yarn (Cascade 220 in burgundy) for the Knitting Olympics! So exciting. I may also have ordered some Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride and some Noro, just to get the free shipping, of course…

I may be out of my mind…
January 18th, 2006 by Crumpet

…but I’ve decided to join the Knitting Olympics, as brought to us by The Yarn Lunatic Harlot. I’ll be attempting to knit Mariah from Knitty in 16 days. If all goes well and I’m not psychotic, quivering and curled up on the floor, I’ll have a new finished cardigan the day before my birthday!
