Z is for Zen
That’s twelve solid hours worth of lino carving right there. My hand protector worked a treat, but my fingertips are sore.
This is my last photo in the Alphabet Shoot competition. People are still uploading their Z photos, but go and check out all the awesomeness from the entire competition in this photo pool.
Apart from being good photo fodder, prints made from the lino block will feature in the new animated short film I’m making. I was hoping to have all my lino carved and printed by yesterday (haha!) so I could start shooting today and tomorrow, but I still have a lot of carving to do today. So, the new plan is to print tomorrow morning (it’s a public holiday today in Australia, so the print shop isn’t open) and shoot something tomorrow afternoon in preparation for my crit in class on Friday. It’s going to be tight, but hopefully I can do it.

I really love both of these, Crump. I’m kind of amazed at your versatility. I have a friend, a professional artist, who has a definite style. You can see her works, and see where she’s coming from. She’s very much into abstract patterns with slight variations, quilt-like patterns. These last two pieces remind me of her work.

Lesley, I worked over about two days, but there was definitely 12 hours worth of carving in there. I was going to do a third block yesterday, but I needed some time out…
Alex, I get bored if I stick to the same thing for too long. I do have a definite style, especially when it comes to painting. The story for the animation is about the weaver star (Vega), so I really want the models/prints in it to have a fabric-y feel — I was totally going for the quilt patterns thing. The good thing about these blocks is that I’ll be able to use them for other things when the animation is done, like prints for book covers and whatnot.

In case you’re interested here is a link to Pamela’s work. I got to work with her very briefly on a train station here in Dallas. She coincidentally is Jen-An’s landlord and friend.

Wow! That’s so intricate! Did you carve solidly for 12 hours? My shoulders would not forgive me if I did that! The results are beautiful though
