The Crazy Ones

In one of our classes, the assignment is to look at ourselves and create two finished pieces of artwork from that. Through looking at the universe and science, I’ve decided to represent myself in the simplest form — the sphere (or circle, when you go all 2D) — in order to get to the heart of the matter. My intent is to print 23 lithographs onto silk. Each one is actually a pair of prints, one on each side of the fabric, to symbolise a chromosomal makeup, and each pair of prints represents one thing about me.

Fragments of the self.

I don’t know quite what form the finished piece will take yet, as what I originally intended isn’t really working physically, but I have a few options and I’m printing the whole lot on paper as well that could work as a little library catalogue type thing.

The prints that you can see in this post though are my extra prints that I’m making for the second part of the project. I’m printing all the same images onto them, and then methodically disassembling them strand by strand. I’ll then card everything up so each aspect of myself blends together, and spin a yarn from it on my wheel. I was then going to knit a circle from this, but I think it will actually work better as the yarn, either in a circular skein or balled up into a sphere. Pure potential.

The world just got better.
