Handmade with Attitude

November 30th, 2007 by Crumpet

We went to Mr Crumpet’s work Christmas party tonight, and in the spirit of handmade I pulled out a dress that I made several years ago, from the Vogue Issey Miyake pattern 2438. I loved the pattern before I sewed it, and I loved it after, but I didn’t have the guts to wear it anywhere. To wear this dress properly, you need a good dose of attitude and self-confidence.

I think I’m finally there.

The Dress

That’s what I looked like at the party, but I’m thinking of adopting this look for my work Christmas party next week. A little bit Blade Runner, a little bit rock’n'roll. Do you dare me?

Butterflies.

November 26th, 2007 by Crumpet

"The butterfly effect" kaleidoscope

I felt extremely nauseous before leaving for work this morning.

My results were released at 8am, and I was suffering my usual bout of self doubt. I had to leave the house right about then as well, in order to get to work on time. I decided that being a little late was worth it.

It turns out I didn’t need to worry. Three High Distinctions (thanks to Vetti and Mr Crumpet for help with the animation!) and a Credit. The Credit was for theory, and the annoying thing is that I actually received a Distinction for my essay, worth 80% of the mark, but it was brought down by the Pass I got on the stupid Critical Bibliography assignment — a list of our initial research points made before beginning the essay, and long before we’d had the lecture on the topic I’d chosen for the essay. I think I also got marked down on the essay for the sources that I did end up using — there was a note saying that I’d used too many internet resources and not enough theoretical research (presumably from books). When are academics going to get with the program and realise that accessing valid, published newspaper (and other) articles from reputable authors, critics and journalists online is just as good as reading something from a piece of paper?

Anyway, enough with the bitter. I really loved my time spent at uni this year. Hooray! :D :D :D

We have a PlayStation 1 that we have no use for anymore. Any takers?

Free to good Australian (due to electrics and stuff) home!

IM IN UR POLES MAKIN U FRAIDY

November 23rd, 2007 by Crumpet

My favourite fridge magnets.

I’m getting nervous about the election tomorrow. I’ve been registered to vote since I turned 17, in preparation for when I turned 18. The coalition government was voted in the year before I could have my say. That’s a decade of horrifically depressing voting for me. Every election I get excited that this time the people of Australia will have come to their senses, and every time my heart breaks a little more… and I wonder how my fellow citizens can be so selfish and shortsighted with their reasoning and votes.

For those that don’t know, voting is compulsory in Australia. We are legally required to enrol, go to the polls and put our ballot in the box. We don’t technically have to fill out the ballot, but I really don’t recommend that. Our electoral system is not perfect — a party may receive the most votes but still lose the election because they didn’t win the majority of seats in parliament — but the fact that we have mandatory, preferential voting system is a start. The problem is that when the Liberals (that’s large ‘L’ Liberal, not small ‘l’ liberal — the Australian Liberal party is on the conservative, right wing side) win, I can’t just blame it on a lack of voter turnout…

Giles looks scared, too.

Giles looks on in horror.

(I made those fridge magnets and the puppets from the other recent post for an art project back in semester 1 last year, based on the blatant racism of the Howard government and all those APEC costumes we see Howard and Bush dressed up in — if anyone wants to turn the photos into LOLpols, be my guest.)

Upcycling.

November 23rd, 2007 by Crumpet

It's what's on the inside that counts.

I need help.

Around four years ago I started dismantling our old washing machine with the intent of making the drum into a coffee table. It’s been sitting in the backyard ever since, because I reached a point where I physically couldn’t remove any more of the casing.

Do you know how to take apart a front-loader washing machine?

Do you have tools that I could borrow?

Do you know people with tools I could borrow?

We’ve been on a bit of a cleanliness/house-proud kick here lately, and I’d really love to get this done. Google is offering me nothing but instructions on how to fix washing machines. It’s not helpful.

For more views, see The Washing Machine Project I’ve set up on Flickr.

How do I get the drum out of the casing?
