A Lace Odyssey

1 July, 2008 (23:20) |

The first of the post-printmaking assessment project posts!

Full disclosure — I’m starting with the part of the project that I was least happy with. Not unhappy, just less enthusiastic in the final presentation than the other stuff.

For this one, I spun all the yarn from white merino rovings, then knit it up into lace based on Elizabeth Zimmermann’s pi shawl pattern (possibly my favourite pattern ever). Each piece of lace contains one section of the same lace pattern I’d used in the previous circle, and all mistakes were left as is. I see them as lace galaxies, webs or mandalas, and they’re a reflection on creation, evolution, the universe and life.

Behold, lots of pictures.

First project yarns

Much, much finer project singles.

Taut.

Pinned down.

310 metres of handspun laceweight.

Knitting with weaving.

Red galaxies.

The fourth.

Destruction/Creation

Green Galaxy.

A Lace Odyssey

I think part of the reason I’m less happy with this part of the work is that I didn’t actually finish everything. There should be two blue lace circles as well, but I ran out of time and had to improvise with the final setup. It still said what I wanted to say… but I wish I’d had more time. I’m still going with the last two pieces, because I need to get them done for the next stage of the project. All of these with be frogged, with the red yarn knit into something else, and the blue and green crocheted into the Lorenz Manifold next semester. Hopefully.

In the meantime, I’m very much enjoying knitting all the things I had to put on hold during the semester…

I think the last pic is my fav. It’s very “Tee-hee. You don’t see me. I’m sneaky!”

No, it’s Crumpet hating the way her head looks in photos. Boost her self-confidence!

Actually, I ended up taking some where my head looked okay, but in the end this was the best jumper photo, and also the most fun. :)
