The one where I almost miss a post due to falling asleep on the couch.

I’ve worked a lot over the past several days. And been exhausted. I fell asleep on the couch tonight while watching TV with Mr C, and was shocked when I woke up an hour or so later to discover that it was only 11:10pm, and not the 12:30am I was anticipating.

So, a blog post of photos.

I made a thing.

this is a cardigan. no, really.

And with a little trickery and magic…

curve ball

I turned it into another thing.

baby surprise

Of course, it’s the famous Baby Surprise Jacket by Elizabeth Zimmermann. My first. Rav details here. I’m still stunned by it’s ingeniousness. It was for Lola, who I still haven’t met in person yet. But Gizo, I forgot to tell you that it’s a hand wash only item. Hopefully it is not a tiny surprise jacket yet.

  1. ha! wash! ha!
it’s fine still, and amazingly puke free…. it’s a great jacket for in the car – so easy to get on and off a sleeping girl (ha! sleeping! ha!)…

  2. Yay! I just made one of them too. Well, a few weeks ago.

  3. That’s beautiful! My only knitting projects so far have been tube type things – headbands and the like – and I’m now just venturing into creating-a-beanie land. I’ll see how that goes. I really want to make a jacket like this, though, for my little niece – luckily she is only a few weeks old, so I’ve got a while until she’ll fit into something like this. The colours are great; love the texture of the yarn.

  4. The Baby Surprise Jacket would be a really good beginner type project to learn some techniques on. It’s straight garter stitch, so there’s no fancy patterns to pay attention to, but it’s got just enough spice to remain interesting. The techniques you use are increasing and decreasing to make mitred corners and for altering fullness at certain areas on the jacket, a tiny bit of short row shaping and picking up stitches.

Also, if you need a hat pattern, I have a simple one here.

  5. Awesome, I’m glad to hear all that. I might give the Baby Surprise jacket a whirl after I make the beanie from your pattern — I’ve just bought some 8ply that should work really well for that. I’ll have to get a circular needle tho, which is kinda scary. :/

Then again, I thought the purl stitch was scary yesterday, but today I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. Hooray for youtube knitters.
