For about a month now I’ve been collecting images of circles and space and such on Once Upon a Spacetime, my MFA tumblr. So of course the first thing I did after setting up my studio this week was draw lines. I was thinking of them as threads or a warp, and have been playing with op art ideas of perception and the way our brains interpret visual signals. The lines evolved into opening sentences from novels. Today I took the camera in and started taking pictures. Not sure where it’s going from here, but that’s part of the fun, right…?

The Whirlpool
I’ve been taking a whole bunch of photos of my latest project (any RMIT printmakers should read that as “exchange portfolio”…), with the intent of posting them here, but I never got around to it. And now I’m so close to being finished that it seems silly to post them until it’s all done.
Getting the camera out for those photos has been good for me though. It’s been a while since I’ve used it for anything other than documentation, so as I’ve been photographing the project, I’ve made sure to make time for fun with the camera, even if it’s just taking photos of a few things that I like to keep on my desk. Sometimes I prefer these little creations to my actual work.
